Top 10 tips for a Moyne holiday with the kids

Moyne Shire is jampacked with activities and events great for the asouthcombe
kids. Some are better choices for summer, others are ideal for these cooler winter months. Take a look below and our suggestions - and the best thing is many of them are FREE!

Our top 10 for the little ones

Yambuk
The Giant Sand Dune Slide - a 33-metre thrill-seeking ride down Yambuk's sand dunes!   Head to Yambuk Lake via the Princes Highway.   Climb the steps to the top of the slide for panoramic views along the coastline and out to Lady Julia Percy Island.   Enjoy a picnic or dangle a line at the lake, bbq facilities, toilets and plenty of parking.   It is not safe to swim at Yambuk Beach.

Port Fairy
Imagine you were the lighthouse keeper and follow the track around Griffiths Island to the historic lighthouse. The lighthouse is one of Port Fairy’s best-known buildings and although it’s not open for inspection you can walk along the all weather wall to the door, just as the former keepers did.

Koroit
The wonderful Tower Hill Game Reserve. A nature reserve in a dormant volcano, Tower Hill is alive with natural wildlife, including koals, kangaroos, emus and wallabies. There are loads of walking tracks and the barbecue and  picnic facilities create an idealic setting for a relaxing day. Rug up with a beanie and a coat and take a walk before you drop into the natural history centre, a must do for all visitors.

Wangoom
In winter and spring Hopkins Falls are a spectacular sight. After heavy rains the water literally gushes over the jagged rocks, while in summer when the Hopkins River slows, the water comes over at a much gentler pace.   Enjoy a picnic in the reserve adjacent to the falls.

Mortlake
A unique and exciting opportunity awaits visitors to Mortlake. You can fossick for your very own special gemstone. Olivine is a semi-precious gemstone which can be found at the Mt Shadwell Quarry. Check at the Mortlake Visitor Information Centre for times and entry conditions.

Peterborough – Nullawarre – Childers Cove
While the 12 Apostles are very well known, Childers Cove near Nullawarre is a wonderful stretch of protected beach and a great picnic spot. In January 1839 the barque Children was wrecked here, one of the first of many to be wrecked along this Shipwreck Coast.

Hawkesdale
The funkiest public toilet in the south-west is in the township of Hawkesdale, adjacent to the public swimming pool.  Designed by the students from Hawkesdale P12 College this toilet is an amalgamation of function and form.

Allansford
Cheeseworld at Allansford is the showcase of the Western District’s wonderful dairy industry.  The dairy products produced here are acknowledged as some of the best in the country. Cheeseworld is a great place to bring the kids, you can taste test local cheeses for free, browse the museum of early farm life and enjoy a meal or treat from the cafe.  Open daily.

Killarney
The rock pools at Killarney Beach are a wonderful habitat for small marine creatures, interesting seaweeds, shore birds and items washed in on the tide. While the beach is not generally on the agenda during the cooler months, breathing the fresh sea air while rugged up in a beanie and coat is a wonderful experience.

Macarthur
Mt Eccles National Park is just west of Macarthur.  Geological features of international significance can be found here.  Favourite things include the beautiful Lake Surprise, the Lava Cave (take a torch) and the beautiful little blue wrens that dart through the manna gum forest. Mt Eccles is a hidden gem and a fantastic family experience.
