Discover Mount Eccles

mt_eccles_1Mount Eccles also known as Budj Bim and one of the lesser known national parks in Victoria is in actual fact an area of local and national significance.  Formed 20 to 30,000 years ago and rich in flora, fauna and with one of the largest remaining stands of Manna Gums in Victoria makes this an ideal home for its significant population of Koalas, for bushwalkers and those who love such a rich diverse environment.   Listed on the National Heritage Register in 2004 Budj Bim named such by the Gunditjmara people who were the traditional owners and who harvested eels and fish at the nearby Lake Condah and is known to be the only place in Australia where indigenous people built permanent housing.

A long dormant volcano Budj Bim is the source of the Tyrendarra lava flow which extends over 50km to the southwest and makes up the complex system of channels and weirs through which the eels and fish were harvested.    The geological features include Lake Surprise, a crater lake, lava canals, a natural bridge, lava blisters, a collapsed lava tunnel and lava cave.

Only 10 minutes drive from the township of Macarthur and 55km north west of Port Fairy via the C184 this tranquil landscape is ideal even for an overnight stay at its bush campground (which has hot water showers) or just a bush walk and picnic.  So if you are looking for something to do this winter take a day trip out and immerse yourself in the heritage of this peaceful haven.
