Blockbuster movies to screen at Port Fairy

Port Fairy’s Reardon Theatre will host blockbuster movies New Moon: The Twilight Saga and Michael Jackson: This Is It in January.

The movies are part of a sensational lineup for the theatre this summer season, with other popular films including Charlie & Boots, Up, The Hangover, Cloudy Even With A Chance of Meatballs, Mao’s Last Dancer and more.

Port Fairy Film Society vice-president George Dummett said the upcoming summer season was shaping up to be one of its biggest.

“This year we have been fortunate to secure some very popular new release titles, which of course movie lovers have been unable to view locally due to the Warrnambool cinema fire,” Mr Dummett said.

“People have been asking for these films so we are thrilled to be able to meet that demand.”

Moviegoers will be able to enjoy improved viewing due to a $12,000 upgrade ($5000 contributed by Moyne Shire Council and the remainder by the film society), which will enhance the sound system and lamp house at the Reardon Theatre.

Tourism Marketing Coordinator Tanya Waterson said Port Fairy’s summer theatre season was popular with tourists and locals alike, but the 2009/2010 season would feature a particularly exciting line up.

“Each year the film society does a wonderful job sourcing a variety of movies which cater for adults, young adults and children,” Mrs Waterson said.

“This year, to be able to screen New Moon and the Michael Jackson film is very exciting and a great credit to the film society.

“There is a lot of demand for both these movies – and others on this season’s list – as the Warrnambool cinema fire in August means they have not been screened nearby.”

She said Charlie & Boots, which screened at the Capitol Cinema’s temporary home at Brauer College, would also be popular due to its connection to Warrnambool.

“We are confident these movies will generate even more visitors to Port Fairy over the summer months.

“Movie enthusiasts who would have usually viewed these films in Warrnambool will now have the chance to see them in Port Fairy, whereas up until this announcement they were probably waiting for a DVD release.

“We look forward to welcoming everyone to Port Fairy over this season.”

Moyne Shire, through its Gardens By East Beach and Southcombe By The Sea Caravan Parks, covers the cost of the Reardon Theatre’s summer season. It also supports the film society during this time with hands-on help and marketing.

The Port Fairy Film Society is looking for volunteers to help over the summer season.
