Taste the flavours of Moyne Shire at Cheese World
This weekend's tasty Food and Wine Winter Weekends festival highlights the many delicious items on offer throughout
Moyne. Port Fairy has a particulary recognised cafe and restaurant culture, which is promoted and enjoyed during this Winter Weekends' instalment. Throughout the shire you can enjoy fine food and wine, with Cheese World at Allansford a fantastic place to taste the great produce created in our region.
Unique cheese tastings, including cheese and yoghurt from Australia's first milking herd of water buffalo, add flavour to this essential stop at the end of the Great Ocean Road.
Cheese World celebrates the region's history and traditions in the cheese and dairy industry. The complex sits opposite the Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory, which was first established there in 1888. A museum, which explores the dairy industry and cheesemaking in the region, also forms part of the complex.
More than 100 Australian cheeses are available for tasting, with tasting sessions running throughout the day at the adjacent cheese and wine cellar. A local highlight unique to Victoria's Great South Coast region is water buffalo cheese and yoghurt from Shaw River Cheese, which is Australia's first milking herd of water buffalo. The farm house dairy in Yambuk produces yoghurt, mozzarella, and semi-hard and table cheese from the herd, which began with the import of Riverine Buffalo from Italy in 1995 and Murrah Buffalo from Bulgaria in 1996.
