Explore Moyne Shire's volcanic landscapes
Exploring Moyne Shire's volcanic history is a popular holiday adventure for young families and recent volcanic activity in the Northern Hemisphere has sparked new interest in the region's Kanawinka Geopark sites.
Kanawinka Landscapes is the name given to the volcanic plain which stretches roughly from the town of Colac in Victoria to Millicent in South Australia. This is an area of about 27,000 square kilometres and includes 58 geosites.
Some amazing volcanic sites are situated in the Moyne Shire boundaries including Tower Hill, Mount Eccles and Lady Julia Percy Island, and several lesser known sites such as Hopkins Falls at Wangoom and Mt Shadwell at Mortlake. Even the rocky shoreline at Port Fairy's south beach is a feature as it is part of the longest lava flow in the state, the lava originating from Mt Rouse at Penshurst.
If you plan to explore the region's volcanic sites, stop into the Visitor Information Centre for more information and some educational activities for the kids.
