Titanic Weekend in May
Friday, 25 February 2011 00:00

Port Fairy will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Titanic, with a nautical themed weekend of events on May 28th and 29th.
A host of unusual links to the Titanic sparked the Visitor Information Centre's tourism officer Andrea Lowenthal to develop a series of events to coincide with worldwide celebrations of the centenary of the launch of the vessel.
A program for the Titanic Weekend has been released, with some great events planned to celebrate the launch of White Star Line's RMS Titanic, which was built at the dockyards of Harland and Wolff in Belfast, Northern Ireland and launched on May 31st, 1911.
Ms Lewenthal says the Titanic has become the most famous shipwreck in the world and the town of Port Fairy, which was named Belfast from 1843 to 1887, shares many commonalities with the famous ship.
"We invite visitors to the region to join us in commemorating this ship and others who have met the same fate in our treacherous Southern Ocean," she says.
Events over the weekend include:
- Historical Exhibitions - Hear information about the many ships lost along the Shipwreck Coast.
- The Historic Lifeboat Station - visitors able to see the oldest self righting lifeboat in the world and marvel at the collection of 19th century rescue equipment.
- Family History Research - Most of us came from somewhere else, so find your Family's immigrant story.
- Port Fairy Citizens Band - Our band didn't go down with the ship and they will perform for your pleasure.
- Commemorative Church Service - We will remember those who perished and those who still fish and sail our waters.
