Moyne to Murray riders in training
Friday, 11 March 2011 00:00
Expect to see cyclists out on the roads around Moyne Shire in the coming weeks as four local teams hit the pointy end of training for the 24 hour Murray to Moyne cycling relay on 2 and 3 April to raise money for health organisations across Australia.
Event coordinator Alecia Dodson says 105 teams are registered for the event this year, comprising 110 cyclists, and she hopes more will register in the coming weeks.
"We have some new teams on board raising money for Prader Willi Syndrome, Doctors without Borders, Diabetes Australia, Leukeamia Foundation and many more," she says.
The annual relay began in 1987, organised by local Graham Woodrup and his wife Hester to raise money for the Port Fairy Hospital. That year the teams raised $10,000 and by 2009 the relay had grown to 1435 riders representing 150 organisations and raising over $1.25 million for Hospitals and Health related organisations in Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia.
Ms Dodson says 2011 marks the 25th anniversary of the relay, which has raised over $15 million dollars over its 24 races. Changes this year include the production of a handbook for cyclists with lots of information including route maps, phone numbers and tips to help them through the 24 hour relay.
