Local Itinerary - Moyne Shire for families

catherine_gristYou can't beat local knowledge to help you find the best of a region when you go to visit - that's why bed and breakfasts are so popular, with their personal service and first-hand recommendations from locals to help you discover some hidden treasures.

Local mum and part-time marketing assistant Catherine Grist has lived in the region for eight years and shares with us some of her favourite places in and around Port Fairy.

Favourite food spots

Cobbs Bakery
23 Bank Street, Port Fairy
(03) 5568 1713

Lunch at Cobbs Bakery in Bank Street is a real treat. You can't go past this spot for delicious pies and rolls and scumptious cakes and slices. The best is their homemade Scottish Malt loaf. I always have a pastie and a piece of hedgehog slice when I go. Delicious!

Madagalli on Bank
24 Bank St, Port Fairy
(03) 5568 1829

Great pizza and a great place to take the family. The restaurant is housed in a historic building, built in 1889, and has lovely indoor dining, a relaxing courtyard with room for the kids, or takeaways if you fancy heading to a nearby park or the beach to eat you delicious, gourmet pizzas.

Port Fairy Confectionary Shop
53 Sackville Street
(03) 5568 2977

A visit into Port Fairy isn't complete with a visit to the Port Fairy Confectionary Shop. Mmmm ... absolutely mouth-watering! With a sweet tooth, I walked out of there with a bag of their delectable lollies.

Fun activities with kids:

Rundells Mahogany Trail Rides
0408 589 546

The children just love to ride the horses along the beach and through the shores of the water on these beautiful gentle horses. A wonderful experience for all and a great way to wear everyone out.

The Little Doll House
34 James St, Port Fairy
03 5568 3349

Relive your childhood through this amazing collection of dolls and toys from the Victorian era through to collectable Barbies from today. Every little girls dream, and a few treats for boys who love their "action figures".

Martin's Point Playground
Gipps Street
Port Fairy

We take our lunch down to Matin's Point near the Moyne river. It has a fantastic playground for the kids and is a scenic spot to enjoy our lunch. A stroll along the wharf to check out all the boats is a must.

Tower Hill
Koroit

A serene place to visit to show the kids some of Australia's natural wildlife including emu's (careful they'll take your snags from the BBQ) and abundant koalas in the trees. We took one of the many walks to explore this extinct volcano and come across kangaroos grazing and an array of birdlife. The centre at Tower Hill was also interesting with Aboriginal artwork and
textiles.

Pea Soup Beach (map)
Port Fairy

We love strolling around the beach at Pea Soup exploring rock pools and paddling in the shores with our young children.

Accommodation

Belfast Cottages
5 Thistle Place, Port Fairy
03 5568 1350

When we have over-flow at our house we send friends to Belfast Cottages. I love this Self contained accommodation for the family. It's affordable and is ideal for a family with lots of space and a fantastic playground for the kids.
