Step aboard and back in time
Wednesday, 30 March 2011 00:00
The Notorious, a full size recreation of a 15th century caravel, is now open for inspection and visitors can climb aboard and inspect both above and below decks at the Port Fairy Wharf.
The ship is open on Saturdays and Sundays only 10am - 4pm and entry is by donation.
The caravel was launched in February and is a full-size replica of a 15th Century caravel from the Age of Discovery. Known as Raven during her construction, the caravel was designed and created by amateur boatbuilder and enthusasst Graeme Wylie at his nearly Bushfield property.
The timber used is reclaimed Monterey cypress, (Cupressus macrocarpa), collected locally from garden parks, homesteads and farms. The keel, laid in April 2002, is ironbark salvaged from the Viaduct Road at the Warrnambool breakwater. Graeme completed the sawn frames, (ribs) at the end of 2003.
