Literary weekend packed with stars

Gregory DayDistinguished poets Gregory Day (pictured) and Homer Rieth are the highlights of the Port Fairy Literary Weekend at the Wishart Gallery from April 15 to 17.

Gregory Day is a novelist, poet and musician whose debut novel The Patron Saint of Eels won the Australian Literature Society Gold Medal in 2006. He has published two further novels: Ron McCoy's Sea of Diamonds (2007) and The Grand Hotel (2010). His CDs include The Black Tower: Songs from the Poetry of WB Yeats, which was
hailed by the Yeats Society of Ireland as the finest musical interpretation of Yeats ever made.

Homer Rieth has long been regarded as one of the finest lyric poets in Australia, evident in his first collection The Dining Car Scene (Black Pepper, 2001). Then in 2010, with the publication of his highly successful verse epic, Wimmera (Black Pepper), he presents another dimension by combining narrative and lyricism in an epic that is historical, literary and mythological in its sweep.

Events over the weekend include

  • Friday, 15 April - DLS Literary Society Members' Reading Night
  • Saturday, 16 April -   Poets in Port featuring Gregory Day and Homer Rieth
  • Saturday 16 April - Launch of Ian Reid's novel The End of Longing
  • Sunday 17 April - Open Reading Session
DLS Literary Society spokesman Brian Edwards says the Literary Weekend kicks off a series of events in Port Fairy for 2011, some of which will be held in conjunction with art exhibitions and launches at the Wishart Gallery.
The gallery is located at 19 Sackville Street, Port Fairy.
