Mortlake Cemetary Tours
Thursday, 07 April 2011 00:00
Looking for a good ghost tale or some interesting local history? Then treat yourself to a tour of the Mortlake Cemetary as part of Australian Heritage Week.
The Mortlake Historical Society is running the tour on April 17 and promises all new stories for those that have been before, as well as the best of the old favourites.
Mortlake was settled in the early 1850s and the cemetery is a treasure trove of local history. "Residents" include Irish immigrant Thomas Montgomery who came to Australia as a teenager and went from being a grocer's apprentice to a business entrepreneur in Mortlake and Terang, a Mortlake Shire councillor and local philanthropist.
There are seven known former Tasmanian convicts buried in the Mortlake cemetery and at least ten people interred at Mortlake were born in the 1700s and also feature on the tour.
The tour starts at 2.30pm on April 17.
Cost is $5 per person
