Bye Bye Birdie
Port Fairy's famous mutton birds have departed their island home for their winter feeding grounds, the Aleutian Islands near Alaska.
The adult birds have left their chicks behind in the burrows where they will remain until hunger brings them out of the nest and the
natural instinct to fly off takes over. This is usually early May. The journey north takes around two months and the distance
covered is around 15,000 kilometres.
The birds return to Port Fairy in late September an event eagerly awaited by the residents of the town.
