Casino Memorial Service
Monday, 20 June 2011 08:29
The Casino, a steamer which operated in Victoria's west coast arrived in Australian waters in 1881. For almost 50 years she transported goods along the coast and was soon to celebrate her jubilee. The Koroit Steam Navigation Company who viewed her whilst she lay an anchor in Lady Bay purchased her immediately and for many years she sailed between Melbourne and Portland loading and off loading her goods as she went to harbours and bays such as Apollo Bay and Port Fairy. Sadly prior to any celebrations planned she rolled over and sank 130 metres off shore of Apollo Bay at 8.45am on the 10th July 1932
. The SS Casino now lies in shallow waters southwest of Wild Dog Creek.
Come help us commemorate this ship and those that lost their lives, one of which was the Captain, on Sunday 10 July at 11am at the SS Casino Cairn memorial in Gipps Street, opposite the History Centre.
